A Match Made in Heaven: ‘The Cloud’ and The Relocation Industry
Posted on 11 May 2010 by matthewshore
Eric Anders from RELORoundtable knew little about what Cloud technology really was until he was approached by Curt Clements, Move One Inc.’s CEO, who wanted to introduce him to how Move One Inc. applies this innovative technology to their integrated global relocation, removal and logistics services.
Move One Inc., uses these virtual resources provided by Radix Technologies, to facilitate collaborative business processes, improve communications and enhance customer service with both their international corporate clients and relocating assignees.
However, before accepting the invitation, Anders decided to find out for himself what this technology truly entailed and why it was considered as a significant element in transforming how IT will be delivered in the future.
He was initially enlightened by a simplified introduction video about the basics of the technology on the Radixcloud website, then by a lengthy and in-depth recording from prominent IT professionals at the Javits Center in New York. He also delved into how the United States Government is adopting this new technology as well as reading up on other technology industry expert’s research, such as David Linthicum’s.
Contrary to his preconceptions, the Cloud is not just some ‘large, dark, ominous thing’ suspended above the global mobility service provision industries. Cloud technology is actually a manageable, flexible, comprehensive and promising piece of technology.
Indeed, this virtual third party hosting space runs your existing applications without you needing to manage any hardware or configure any devices. Essentially, this eliminates the need for expensive, privately owned servers as well as all the attendant installation and maintenance costs. The scalability of exploited data space and ease of use, coupled with robust data security measures makes this service very attractive.
In spite of all these benefits, some industry professionals remain wary of the Cloud as it is still a new and perhaps mystical piece of technology, preferring to stand on the side lines to see how their competitors do business in the cloud, while others claim there are still too many privacy, security and stability risks involved or do not trust in providers’ reliability.
At the end of his exploration, Anders remains undecided – calling for industry leaders to truly understand the technology, its benefits as well as potential flaws but perhaps more importantly how companies can truly make the most of The Cloud.
To encourage the dissemination of information and a more in depth understanding of this technology, Anders has created a Cloud Computing forum on the RELORoundtable website for people to contribute to and exchange information.
Eric Anders’ full report on the subject and much more, can be found on the RELORoundtable blog.
