At his keynote at the Mobile World Congress, Google CEO Eric Schmidt annouced the new company focus on mobile applications and smartphones. He said Google is now thinking about things in terms of “Mobile First”.
Schmidt said that it was because mobile phones will be the most popular endpoint – In three years, smart phones will surpass PC sales, with mobile web adoption moving eight times faster than it did on the PC.
The Google chief executive listed three development areas that Google believes will be of particular importance in the mobile world: robust computing power, the number of people connected to the internet, and third, and perhaps the most important – cloud computing, the delivery of hosted services over the internet.
Mr Schmidt went on to talk about the importance of cloud computing, in which applications and data are handled by the Internet.
“If you don’t use the power of the cloud you will fail.” said Schmidt.
