By 2020, the data and applications that most people use will be housed in the cloud rather than on PCs, according to a survey of around 900 technology experts and observers, sponsored by the Pew Research Center.

71 percent of these experts predict we’ll be working primarily through web-based and mobile apps, such as Facebook and Google Docs, and less on software installed on our own desktops.

The survey predicts that in the next 10 years, there will be a heavy migration toward working via networked devices, and data will be stored largely on remote servers operated by third parties.

Benefits? Easy, instant and individualized access to applications and data anytime, anywhere.

The advantage of instant access to information regardless of device, operating system or location is a huge factor in the dominance of web apps over desktop apps. “The cloud” is accessible from work, from home, from any location with an Internet connection, and increasingly, from our ever-smarter mobile devices.

Who wouldn’t find that kind of postmodern fluidity appealing? We’re no longer tied to offices for work, nor are our social activities locked away at home.

Move One Inc., uses these virtual resources provided by Radix Technologies, to facilitate collaborative business processes, improve communications and enhance customer service with both their international corporate clients and relocating assignees.

However, before accepting the invitation, Anders decided to find out for himself what this technology truly entailed and why it was considered as a significant element in transforming how IT will be delivered in the future.

He was initially enlightened by a simplified introduction video about the basics of the technology on the Radixcloud website, then by a lengthy and in-depth recording from prominent IT professionals at the Javits Center in New York. He also delved into how the United States Government is adopting this new technology as well as reading up on other technology industry expert’s research, such as David Linthicum’s.

Contrary to his preconceptions, the Cloud is not just some ‘large, dark, ominous thing’ suspended above the global mobility service provision industries. Cloud technology is actually a manageable, flexible, comprehensive and promising piece of technology.

Indeed, this virtual third party hosting space runs your existing applications without you needing to manage any hardware or configure any devices. Essentially, this eliminates the need for expensive, privately owned servers as well as all the attendant installation and maintenance costs. The scalability of exploited data space and ease of use, coupled with robust data security measures makes this service very attractive.

In spite of all these benefits, some industry professionals remain wary of the Cloud as it is still a new and perhaps mystical piece of technology, preferring to stand on the side lines to see how their competitors do business in the cloud, while others claim there are still too many privacy, security and stability risks involved or do not trust in providers’ reliability.

At the end of his exploration, Anders remains undecided – calling for industry leaders to truly understand the technology, its benefits as well as potential flaws but perhaps more importantly how companies can truly make the most of The Cloud.

To encourage the dissemination of information and a more in depth understanding of this technology, Anders has created a Cloud Computing forum on the RELORoundtable website for people to contribute to and exchange information.

Eric Anders’ full report on the subject and much more, can be found on the RELORoundtable blog.

Moscow, Russia: After the recent launch of its data centers in Hungary and China, Radix Technologies, an Information Technology company, is holding a series of conferences focusing on cloud computing and global workforce mobility challenges. The series kicked off in Budapest on February 25, with events following in Dubai, Beijing and Shanghai.

These conferences aim to demonstrate how and why cloud-based solutions provide the greatest flexibility and value. Cloud computing, Software as a Service and Radix’s own solutions can help organizations manage their businesses more effectively, instead of investing excessive resources to maintain their in-house systems.

For Judit Kató, Sales and Marketing Manager of Radix Technologies, the benefits of cloud computing are clear. The ability to effectively manage resources as requirements dictate, drastically improve reliability and the low start-up costs of switching to cloud applications should be attractive to businesses, but many are unaware of how they could take advantage of them. Radix Technologies offers via™, a suite of SaaS applications for the global HR mobility industry and RadixCloud™, a range of cloud hosting solutions.

Ms. Kató explains: “via™ uses the Cloud to create a common online space for HR, assignees and vendors (such as moving or immigration companies) to work together. For HR managers, the system allows unrivaled control and visibility over the process of relocating an employee. Having the application on a cloud platform makes this possible and we want to raise awareness of this model among industry professionals.”

For organizations wishing to outsource their IT infrastructure, RadixCloud™ offers various cloud hosting options. David Corriveau, Managing Director of Radix Technologies suggests that cloud hosting takes the unnecessary suspense out of managing IT infrastructure. “We have the philosophy that for many businesses, IT infrastructure is a weak link; many trust in-house systems that aren’t fit for purpose, and find themselves struggling with escalating hardware costs. Hosting your mission critical systems and data on the cloud significantly mitigates the risk.”

Radix Technologies welcomes business owners and directors of corporate Human Resources, Global Mobility and Information Technology to attend the Moscow conference at the Golden Ring Hotel on May 27, 2010 from 9.30 am to 3.30 pm.

Should you wish to participate at the event, please RSVP to Judit Kató at judit.kato@radix-technologies.com.

Good news for fans of Microsoft’s browser, but some bad news for people who still use Windows XP.

The good news: Next version of Internet Explorer will add support for the latest web technologies like HTML5, which will result in support for video standards like MPEG-4 and H.264. Other improvements will include better browsing experience and speed, a new JavaScript compiler that will make websites like Gmail more responsive, CSS3 features and scalable vector graphics.

The bad news: Microsoft has made it official that IE9 will not support Windows XP, leaving behind all XP users to upgrade to Windows 7 if they are to use IE9.

With IE9 Microsoft wants to cover the drop in its market share since rivals like Mozilla, Google and Opera came on stage. Currently, its global usage share is 50 to 60 percent.

The Internet Explorer project started in 1995, but fully developed as a web browser in 1999. In the late 1990s Microsoft spent over $100 million a year for developing IE.

He said Google is now thinking about things in terms of “Mobile First”.

Schmidt said that it was because mobile phones will be the most popular endpoint – In three years, smart phones will surpass PC sales, with mobile web adoption moving eight times faster than it did on the PC.

The Google chief executive listed three development areas that Google believes will be of particular importance in the mobile world: robust computing power, the number of people connected to the internet, and third, and perhaps the most important – cloud computing, the delivery of hosted services over the internet.

Mr Schmidt went on to talk about the importance of cloud computing, in which applications and data are handled by the Internet.

“If you don’t use the power of the cloud you will fail.” said Schmidt.

The City Council of Dalles, a small town in Oregon, voted Monday to accept a $100,000 grant from Google to build, operate and maintain a wi-fi cloud in the downtown business district. The grant money would be used to purchase and install the equipment and maintain it for three years.

With connecting its data centers, speeding up search, and lowering the cost for streaming billions of videos a month on YouTube, Google is taking its first step in connecting that fiber backbone to consumer’s homes.

This kind of effort makes sense, as Google seeks to offer a whole new generation of applications that would be available in the cloud.
